We are excited to announce that after a slow start (getting through the UK Charity Commission loopholes and getting the word out of our existence at the University of Harare) we are now regularly making grants to medical students in their third year or above at the University of Harare who are currently experiencing hardship. As many of you will know from recent news reports, daily life is very challenging in Zimbabwe at the moment. However, these inspirational young people are still finding a way to get to university (transport costs are very high), attending their classes and taking the next steps on their journey to being Zimbabwe's doctors of tomorrow.
In the upcoming blogs we will be introducing you to some of the students we have recently supported with the cost of the fees and living expenses.
Today's student is Maudy, who is a fourth year medical student at the University of Harare. Maudy describes medicine as 'her calling'. She has said the following:
"From my experience medical school is not a walk in the park. And if you have financial problems your performance is greatly affected. My parents are both unemployed and struggling to make ends meet...at one point, I thought of giving up. But since I received help from DOTZ, I’ve had a remarkable change in my life. As Albert Schweitzer said, 'At times, our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.'"
